Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in engine/lib/views.php in Elgg before 1.8.5 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the view parameter to index.php. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2013 by Mike with Qualys (Website). The advisory is shared at elgg.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-6561 since 05/23/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 1.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
