Linux Kernel 3.2 bat_socket_read memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 3.2. This affects the function bat_socket_read. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2011-4604. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 3.2 (Operating System). Affected is the function bat_socket_read. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The bat_socket_read function in net/batman-adv/icmp_socket.c in the Linux kernel before 3.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted batman-adv ICMP packet.

The weakness was disclosed 06/07/2013 by Paul (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4604 since 11/29/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/03/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74767 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-2012-65)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166480 (OpenSuSE Security Update for kernel (openSUSE-SU-2013:0925-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71738), Tenable (74767), SecurityFocus (BID 51020†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-37255†). The entries VDB-5583, VDB-7842, VDB-7994 and VDB-8009 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
