Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache XML Security for C++. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function DSIGReference::getURIBaseTXFM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the XML Signature Reference functionality (xsec/dsig/DSIGReference.cpp) in Apache Santuario XML Security for C++ (aka xml-security-c) before 1.7.1 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via malformed XPointer expressions, probably related to the DSIGReference::getURIBaseTXFM function.
The weakness was disclosed 08/20/2013 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security (Website). The advisory is shared at svn.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2154 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66917 (Debian DSA-2710-1 : xml-security-c - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85017), Tenable (66917), SecurityFocus (BID 60594†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45134†). The entries VDB-64718 and VDB-64716 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
