A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3669 since 06/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62707 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : webkit vulnerabilities (USN-1617-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
