Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Graphite up to 0.9.10. This affects some unknown processing in the library render/datalib.py of the component Whitelist. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Graphite 0.9.5 through 0.9.10 uses the pickle Python module unsafely, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted serialized object, related to (1) remote_storage.py, (2) storage.py, (3) render/datalib.py, and (4) whitelist/views.py, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-5093.
The weakness was presented 09/27/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-5942 since 09/27/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12942 (Graphite Cross-Site Scripting and Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Secunia (SA54556†). See VDB-65044 and VDB-65042 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
