Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in X2Engine X2CRM. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument file with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in X2Engine X2CRM before 3.5 allows remote authenticated administrators to include and execute arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) in the file parameter to index.php/admin/translationManager.
The weakness was released 09/30/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared at htbridge.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5692 since 09/04/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by High-Tech Bridge SA and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81513 (X2Engine < 3.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 2.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
