Summary
A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in MongoDB. Affected is the function nativeHelper. Executing a manipulation of the argument first can lead to input validation.
This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2013-1892. Moreover, an exploit is present.
The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MongoDB (Database Software). This vulnerability affects the function nativeHelper. The manipulation of the argument first with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
MongoDB before 2.0.9 and 2.2.x before 2.2.4 does not properly validate requests to the nativeHelper function in SpiderMonkey, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (invalid memory access and server crash) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted memory address in the first argument.
The weakness was disclosed 10/01/2013 with SCRT (Website). The advisory is shared for download at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1892 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by agixid in Ruby and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 176 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76662 (RHEL 6 : MRG (RHSA-2013:1170)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122710 (MongoDB "nativeHelper.apply" Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83054), Exploit-DB (24947), Tenable (76662), SecurityFocus (BID 58695†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39221†). The entries VDB-65154 and VDB-64433 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
