Dlitz PyCrypto up to 2.6 Pseudo-Random Number Generator Crypto.Random.atfork cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Dlitz PyCrypto up to 2.6. Affected is the function Crypto.Random.atfork of the component Pseudo-Random Number Generator. Performing a manipulation results in cryptographic issue. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2013-1445. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Dlitz PyCrypto up to 2.6. This affects the function Crypto.Random.atfork of the component Pseudo-Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The Crypto.Random.atfork function in PyCrypto before 2.6.1 does not properly reseed the pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) before allowing a child process to access it, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information by leveraging a race condition in which a child process is created and accesses the PRNG within the same rate-limit period as another process.

The weakness was released 10/26/2013 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1445 since 01/26/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70503 (Debian DSA-2781-1 : python-crypto - PRNG not correctly reseeded in some situations), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350501 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python-crypto: ALAS-2013-243).

Upgrading to version 1.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88132), Tenable (70503), SecurityFocus (BID 63201†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42108†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
