Details
A vulnerability was found in F5 Big-ip Protocol Security Module up to 9.4.6 (Firewall Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Accelerator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Traffic Management Microkernel (TMM) in F5 BIG-IP LTM, APM, ASM, Edge Gateway, GTM, Link Controller, and WOM 10.0.0 through 10.2.2 and 11.0.0; Analytics 11.0.0; PSM 9.4.0 through 9.4.8, 10.0.0 through 10.2.4, and 11.0.0 through 11.4.1; and WebAccelerator 9.4.0 through 9.4.8, 10.0.0 through 10.2.4, and 11.0.0 through 11.3.0 might change a TCP connection to the ESTABLISHED state before receiving the ACK packet, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (SIGFPE or assertion failure and TMM restart) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 10/26/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securitytracker.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6016 since 10/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/23/2024).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78133 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : TMM vulnerability (SOL13233)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121705 (F5 BIG-IP Traffic Management Microkernel Denial-of-Service Vulnerability (SOL13233)).
