Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Fortinet FortiOS 4.3.8 (Firewall Software). This affects the function objusagedlg. The manipulation of the argument mkey with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/07/2012 by Benjamin Kunz Mejri with Vulnerability Research Laboratory as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at vulnerability-lab.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Fortinet. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 112 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 4.3.8 B0630 or 5.0 B064 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at OSVDB (85656†) and Secunia (SA50638†). The entry VDB-6535 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
