Red Hat OpenStack -/3.0 Backend memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat OpenStack -/3.0 (Cloud Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenStack Compute (Nova) Folsom, Grizzly, and earlier, when using Apache Qpid for the RPC backend, does not properly handle errors that occur during messaging, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connection pool consumption), as demonstrated using multiple requests that send long strings to an instance console and retrieving the console log.

The weakness was shared 10/29/2013 with Red Hat as Bug 999164 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4261 since 06/12/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/10/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69785 (Fedora 19 : openstack-nova-2013.1.3-2.fc19 (2013-15373)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195895 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Nova Vulnerabilities (USN-2000-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86920), Tenable (69785), SecurityFocus (BID 62200†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41572†).
