Supermicro Intelligent Platform Management up to 2.25 Intelligent Platform Management Interface ACT memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Supermicro Intelligent Platform Management up to 2.25 and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Intelligent Platform Management Interface. The manipulation of the argument ACT with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in cgi/close_window.cgi in the web interface in the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) with firmware before 3.15 (SMT_X9_315) on Supermicro X9 generation motherboards allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the (1) sess_sid or (2) ACT parameter.

The weakness was shared 12/10/2013 (Website). The advisory is available at community.rapid7.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3623 since 05/21/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2024).

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
