GNU libmicrohttpd up to 0.9.31 MHD_digest_auth_check memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2013-7039. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU libmicrohttpd (Web Server). Affected by this issue is the function MHD_digest_auth_check. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the MHD_digest_auth_check function in libmicrohttpd before 0.9.32, when MHD_OPTION_CONNECTION_MEMORY_LIMIT is set to a large value, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long URI in an authentication header.

The weakness was released 12/13/2013 by Florian Weimer (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gnunet.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-7039 since 12/09/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72254 (GLSA-201402-01 : GNU libmicrohttpd: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170070 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for libmicrohttpd (SUSE-SU-2017:1576-1)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.31 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89615), Tenable (72254), SecurityFocus (BID 64138†), Secunia (SA55903†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43113†).
