A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNOME Gnumeric up to 1.12.8. This affects the function ms_escher_get_data. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Heap-based buffer overflow in the ms_escher_get_data function in plugins/excel/ms-escher.c in GNOME Office Gnumeric before 1.12.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted xls file with a crafted length value.
The weakness was disclosed 12/18/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-6836 since 11/20/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75408 (openSUSE Security Update : gnumeric (openSUSE-SU-2014:0138-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
