Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function compat_put_timeval of the file net/socket.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) do_siocgstamp and (2) do_siocgstampns functions in net/socket.c in the Linux kernel before 3.5.4 use an incorrect argument order, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory or cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted ioctl call.
The weakness was disclosed 09/06/2012 by Mikulas Patocka with Red Hat as ed6fe9d614f as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4467 since 08/21/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying the patch ed6fe9d614f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
