A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 17.0.10 (Mail Client Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component HTML Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a html injection vulnerability. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Mozilla Thunderbird 17.x through 17.0.8, Thunderbird ESR 17.x through 17.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.20 allows user-assisted remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an e-mail message containing a data: URL in a (1) OBJECT or (2) EMBED element, a related issue to CVE-2013-6674.
The weakness was presented 02/06/2014 by Ateeq ur Rehman Khan as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2018 since 02/17/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
