Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in memcached up to 1.4.16. This affects the function process_bin_delete of the file memcached.c of the component Verbose Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The process_bin_delete function in memcached.c in memcached 1.4.4 and other versions before 1.4.17, when running in verbose mode, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via a request to delete a key, which does not account for the lack of a null terminator in the key and triggers a buffer over-read when printing to stderr.
The weakness was presented 01/13/2014 as 306 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.google.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0179 since 12/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72024 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : memcached (MDVSA-2014:010)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195811 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Memcached Vulnerabilities (USN-2080-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
