Details
A vulnerability was found in memcached up to 1.4.16 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function do_item_get of the file items.c of the component Verbose Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The do_item_get function in items.c in memcached 1.4.4 and other versions before 1.4.17, when running in verbose mode, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via a request to delete a key, which does not account for the lack of a null terminator in the key and triggers a buffer over-read when printing to stderr, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-0179.
The weakness was published 01/13/2014 as tps://c (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-7290 since 01/10/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
