A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Nagios (Log Management Software). This issue affects the function process_cgivars. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Off-by-one error in the process_cgivars function in contrib/daemonchk.c in Nagios Core 3.5.1, 4.0.2, and earlier allows remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information from process memory or cause a denial of service (crash) via a long string in the last key value in the variable list, which triggers a heap-based buffer over-read.
The weakness was released 01/15/2014 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-7205 since 12/23/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
