The restore_fpu_checking function in arch/x86/include/asm/fpu-internal.h in the Linux kernel before 3.12.8 on the AMD K7 and K8 platforms does not clear pending exceptions before proceeding to an EMMS instruction, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (task kill) or possibly gain privileges via a crafted application.

The weakness was shared 01/18/2014 by halfdog as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1438 since 01/13/2014. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72030 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.12.8-300.fc20 (2014-1062)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
