A vulnerability was found in libimobiledevice 1.1.4 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code in the library tmp/root/.config/libimobiledevice/ of the file userpref.c. The manipulation of the argument HOME with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. userpref.c in libimobiledevice 1.1.4, when $HOME and $XDG_CONFIG_HOME are not set, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on (1) HostCertificate.pem, (2) HostPrivateKey.pem, (3) libimobiledevicerc, (4) RootCertificate.pem, or (5) RootPrivateKey.pem in /tmp/root/.config/libimobiledevice/.
The weakness was shared 01/19/2014 by Marc Deslauriers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2142 since 02/19/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69367 (Ubuntu 12.10 / 13.04 : libimobiledevice vulnerability (USN-1927-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
