Details
A vulnerability was found in Debian syncevolution 1.3.99.6. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
syncevo/installcheck-local.sh in syncevolution before 1.3.99.7 uses mktemp to create a safe temporary file but appends a suffix to the original filename and writes to this new filename, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the new filename.
The weakness was presented 01/27/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1639 since 01/22/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
