Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 15 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function instanceof of the component Javascript Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox before 16.0, Thunderbird before 16.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.13 do not properly perform a cast of an unspecified variable during use of the instanceof operator on a JavaScript object, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (assertion failure) via a crafted web site.
The weakness was shared 10/09/2012 by Christian Holler (Ms2ger) as MFSA 2012-80 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. In general this flaw cannot be exploited through email in the Thunderbird and SeaMonkey products because scripting is disabled, but are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts in those products. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3989 since 07/11/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. OSVDB explains the current understanding of the vulnerability: "The vendor reported this issue as a 'potentially exploitable crash', meaning code execution is hypothetically possible, but has not been confirmed. Given that the vendor ranked the issue as 'critical', OSVDB is categorizing this as a code execution vulnerability."
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62490 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (6e5a9afd-12d3-11e2-b47d-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165422 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2012:1351-1)).
Upgrading to version 16 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
