The Microsoft.XMLDOM ActiveX control in Microsoft Windows 8.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to determine the existence of local pathnames, UNC share pathnames, intranet hostnames, and intranet IP addresses by examining error codes, as demonstrated by a res:// URL, and exploited in the wild in February 2014.
The weakness was published 02/26/2014 with FireEye as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at fireeye.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7331 since 02/25/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. Apply updates per vendor instructions.Applying the patch MS14-052 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21831.
