A vulnerability was found in Gnu GnuTLS (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library lib/x509/verify.c of the component Certificates. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. lib/x509/verify.c in GnuTLS before 3.1.22 and 3.2.x before 3.2.12 does not properly handle unspecified errors when verifying X.509 certificates from SSL servers, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof servers via a crafted certificate.

The weakness was shared 03/06/2014 by Suman Jana as Bug 1069865 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0092 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73038 (Fedora 19 : mingw-gnutls-3.1.22-1.fc19 (2014-3493)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350791 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for gnutls: AL2012-2015-040).

Upgrading to version 3.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13997.
