A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Google Chrome 22.0.1229.79 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Audio Device Handler. Race condition in Google Chrome before 22.0.1229.92 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to audio devices.

The weakness was disclosed 10/08/2012 by Atte Kettunen (Inferno) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as 147499 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5108 since 09/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62457 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (e6161b65-1187-11e2-afe3-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 22.0.1229.92 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.dk. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
