Details
A vulnerability was found in lighttpd (Web Server). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component mod_evhost. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in (1) mod_evhost and (2) mod_simple_vhost in lighttpd before 1.4.35 allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the host name, related to request_check_hostname.
The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2014 by Jann Horn (Website). The advisory is available at lighttpd.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-2324 since 03/12/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
