Details
A vulnerability was found in Jansson up to 2.4. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Jansson, possibly 2.4 and earlier, does not restrict the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a crafted JSON document.
The weakness was published 03/20/2014 by Florian Weimer (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6401 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73166 (Fedora 19 : jansson-2.6-1.fc19 (2014-3782)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166872 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libjansson (openSUSE-SU-2014:0394-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91065), Tenable (73166), SecurityFocus (BID 65503†), Vulnerability Center (SBV-43807†) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2843). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
