Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel 3.4.96/3.10.46/3.14.10 on x86/64 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the component ptrace. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was released 07/04/2014 by Andy (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-4699 since 06/30/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Vitaly Nikolenko and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76378 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS : linux vulnerability (USN-2266-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123687 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2014:0925)). The advisory illustrates:
The exact scope of the bug is somewhat unclear right now. I see no reason why the bug should not be present as far back as Linux 2.6.17, but it seems to be difficult to reproduce on old kernels. (...) More details and a PoC to follow some time next week.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94285), Exploit-DB (34134), Tenable (76378), SecurityFocus (BID 68411†) and OSVDB (108754†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-67177. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
