Linux Kernel up to 3.9.11 TLV snd_ctl_elem_user_tlv Memory race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.9.11 (Operating System). This issue affects the function snd_ctl_elem_user_tlv of the component TLV Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality.

The weakness was presented 06/18/2014 by Lars-Peter Clausen (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-4652 since 06/25/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77298 (RHEL 6 : MRG (RHSA-2014:1083)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195600 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2334-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
