A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime (Multimedia Player Software) (affected version not known). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Atom Handler. The manipulation of the argument mvhd with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 07/23/2014 by Andrea Micalizzi (rgod) as ZDI-14-264 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. The public release happened without involvement of Apple. The advisory contains:
This vulnerability is being disclosed publicly without a patch in accordance with the ZDI 180 day deadline.This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4979 since 07/16/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 215 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
