Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.0 MMU Virtualization resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.0 (Virtualization Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component MMU Virtualization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was presented 08/12/2014 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-97 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xenproject.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5146 since 07/30/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

Some MMU virtualization operations on HVM guests must process every page assigned to a guest. For larger guests, this can tie up a vcpu for a significant amount of time, as the operations are not preemptible. For guests using Hardware Assisted Paging (HAP, see below) this is CVE-2014-5146. For guests not using HAP this is CVE-2014-5149.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77361 (Fedora 19 : xen-4.2.4-7.fc19 (2014-9493)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167732 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2015:0744-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95234), Tenable (77361), SecurityFocus (BID 69198†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030723†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45908†).
