Microsoft OneNote 2007 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted OneNote file that triggers creation of an executable file in a startup folder, aka "OneNote Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 08/12/2014 by Eduardo Prado with Beyond Security as MS14-048 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2815 since 04/10/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77166 (MS14-048: Vulnerability in OneNote Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2977201)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110239 (Microsoft OneNote Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-048)).
Applying the patch MS14-048 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
