A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin (Database Administration Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Table Browser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a php weakness vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-661. Impacted is integrity.
The weakness was released 08/17/2014 by Ashutosh Dhundhara as PMASA-2014-8 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at phpmyadmin.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5273 since 08/16/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The advisory points out:
With a crafted database, table or a primary/unique key column name it is possible to trigger an XSS when dropping a row from the table. With a crafted column name it is possible to trigger an XSS in the ENUM editor dialog. With a crafted variable name or a crafted value for unit field it is possible to trigger a self-XSS when adding a new chart in the monitor page. With a crafted value for x-axis label it is possible to trigger a self-XSS in the query chart page. With a crafted relation name it is possible to trigger an XSS in table relations page.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77305 (phpMyAdmin 4.0.x < 4.0.10.2 / 4.1.x < 4.1.14.3 / 4.2.x < 4.2.7.1 Multiple XSS Vulnerabilities (PMASA-2014-8 - PMASA-2014-9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167139 (OpenSuSE Security Update for phpMyAdmin (openSUSE-SU-2014:1069-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.10.2, 4.1.14.3 or 4.2.7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at phpmyadmin.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
