Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in NetBSD up to 6.0.4/6.1.3 (Operating System). This affects the function execve of the component System Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2014 by Maxime Villard as NetBSD-SA2014-009 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at ftp.netbsd.org. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A memory leak in the kernel could cause a local (un)privileged user to use up kernel memory via a bogus ELF binary, and thus to freeze - or eventually panic - the system.
Upgrading to version 6.0.5 or 6.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95644) and SecurityFocus (BID 69474†). The entries VDB-67436 and VDB-67435 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
