A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The issue has been introduced in 06/26/2013. The weakness was shared 09/09/2014 by Zhibin Hu with Qihoo 360 as MS14-052 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4087 since 04/10/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 440 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77572 (MS14-052: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2977629)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100210 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS14-052)).
Applying the patch MS14-052 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16699.
