A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Lync 2013 (Unified Communication Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Script Handler. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Web Components Server in Microsoft Lync Server 2013 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted URL, aka "Lync XSS Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 09/09/2014 by Noam Rathaus (SecuriTeam) with Beyond Security's SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as MS14-055 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via Securiteam. The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-4070 since 06/12/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77575 (MS14-055: Vulnerability in Microsoft Lync Server Could Allow Denial of Service (2990928)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90976 (Microsoft Lync Server Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS14-055)).
Applying the patch MS14-055 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
