Affected by this issue is the function cdf_check_stream_offset of the file cdf.c of the component apache_mod_php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The cdf_check_stream_offset function in cdf.c in file before 5.19, as used in the Fileinfo component in PHP before 5.4.30 and 5.5.x before 5.5.14, relies on incorrect sector-size data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted stream offset in a CDF file.
The weakness was presented 09/17/2014 by Francisco Alonso with Red Hat Security Response Team as HT6443 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3479 since 05/14/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78310 (Amazon Linux AMI : php54 (ALAS-2014-367)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185089 (HP-UX Apache Server Suite Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03102)).
Upgrading to version 10.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
