Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.16.0/3.16.1/3.16.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component Array Garbage Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The issue has been introduced in 08/03/2014. The weakness was published 09/15/2014 by David Howells as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3631 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Emeric Nasi in ANSI C and been published 7 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 43 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77794 (Fedora 21 : kernel-3.16.2-301.fc21 (2014-10693)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195640 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2379-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96186), Exploit-DB (36268), Tenable (77794), SecurityFocus (BID 70095†) and OSVDB (111298†).
