The weakness was disclosed 10/03/2014 by Mirko Casadei as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-7278 since 10/01/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The advisory points out:
Abusing the 'welcome message' form, an attacker can inject JavaScript code into a core function of the main login page. The persistent javascript code injection in the framLoad() function bypass all the security checks and cause a Denial of Service disabling any access to the router web interface.
A public exploit has been developed by Mirko Casadei in HTML/Javascript. The exploit is available at 1412294400. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 51 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
The posting contains the following remark:
Access is restored with a new firmware installation.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96892) and SecurityFocus (BID 70231†). The entry VDB-67756 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
