Linux Kernel VFS Filesystem pivot_root resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The weakness was shared 10/08/2014 by Andy Lutomirski as Linux VFS denial of service as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The mailinglist post contains:

I'm posting this a little bit early, since a patch is publicly available, the impact is low, and hitting the bad code path at all is quite tedious.
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-7970 since 10/08/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78800 (Fedora 21 : kernel-3.17.1-300.fc21 (2014-12955)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157882 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4301)). The advisory illustrates:

I'll send a proof of concept later on.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at news.gmane.org. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:

if (!is_path_reachable(new_mnt, new.dentry, &root))
   goto out4;
The mailinglist post contains the following remark:
Although, for validation, it should be sufficient to just chroot somewhere as root, escape the chroot (while still chrooted), and then pivot_root(".", ".") on a mountpoint.
