A vulnerability was found in vBulletin 4.2.0/4.2.1/4.2.2 (Forum Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file breadcrumbs_create.php of the component XMLRPC API. The manipulation of the argument conceptid with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. SQL injection vulnerability in includes/api/4/breadcrumbs_create.php in vBulletin 4.2.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.0 PL2, and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the conceptid argument in an xmlrpc API request.

The weakness was disclosed 10/13/2014 by tintinweb as vbulletin 4.x - SQLi in breadcrumbs via xmlrpc API (post-auth) as confirmed posting (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-2022 since 02/19/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by tintinweb (tintinweb) and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 272 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:breadcrumbs_create.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11664 (vBulletin Breadcrumbs XMLRPC API SQL Injection Vulnerability.).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
