Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox 30.0/31.0/31.1.0/32.0 (Web Browser). This affects the function get_tile of the component WebM Video Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2014 by Abhishek Arya as MFSA2014-77 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1578 since 01/16/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78489 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2014:1635)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122754 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner firefox (RHSA-2014:1635)).
Upgrading to version 33 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
