Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 04/12/2011. The weakness was published 10/14/2014 by Rohit Mothe (iDefense) with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS14-056 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via iDefense. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-4126 since 06/12/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1281 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78431 (MS14-056: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2987107)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100212 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS14-056)).
Applying the patch MS14-056 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16853.
