Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9/10/11 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function CAttrArray. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 through 11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 10/14/2014 by Peter Van Eeckhoutte (corelanc0d3r) with VeriSign iDefense Labs as MS14-056 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-4141 since 06/12/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. Berend-Jan Wever summarizes the issue this way: "The CAttrArray object initially allocates a CImplAry buffer of 0x40 bytes, which can store 4 attributes. When the buffer is full, it is grown to 0x60 bytes. A new buffer is allocated at a different location in memory and the contents of the original buffer is copied there. The repro causes the code to do this, but the code continues to access the original buffer after it has been freed."
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2414 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78431 (MS14-056: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2987107)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100212 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS14-056)).
Applying the patch MS14-056 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16508.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (78431), SecurityFocus (BID 70342†), Secunia (SA60968†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031018†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46450†).
