A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2/3/4/5/5.1 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block in the library System.Web.Mvc.dll. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in System.Web.Mvc.dll in Microsoft ASP.NET Model View Controller (MVC) 2.0 through 5.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted web page, aka "MVC XSS Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 10/14/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-059 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-4075 since 06/12/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78434 (MS14-059: Vulnerability in ASP.NET MVC Could Allow Security Feature Bypass (2990942)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90984 (Microsoft ASP.NET MVC Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability (MS14-059)).
Applying the patch MS14-059 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17199.
