Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component CoreStorage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
CoreStorage in Apple OS X before 10.10 retains a volume s encryption keys upon an eject action in the unlocked state, which makes it easier for physically proximate attackers to obtain cleartext data via a remount.
The weakness was disclosed 10/16/2014 by Benjamin King, Karsten Iwen, Dustin Li and Ken J. Takekoshi as HT6535 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-4430 since 06/20/2014. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
When an encrypted volume was logically ejected while mounted, the volume was unmounted but the keys were retained, so it could have been mounted again without the password.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78550 (Mac OS X < 10.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE) (Shellshock)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
This issue was addressed by erasing the keys on eject.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97639), Tenable (78550), SecurityFocus (BID 70628†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031063†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46702†). The entries VDB-10344, VDB-67593, VDB-67592 and VDB-67590 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
