Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component IOHIDFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The IOHIDFamily kernel extension in Apple iOS before 8 and Apple TV before 7 lacks proper bounds checking on write operations, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the kernel's context via a crafted application.
The weakness was released 10/16/2014 by Felipe Andres Manzano (cunzhang) with Adlab of Venustech as HT6535 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4380 since 06/20/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
