IBM DB2 up to 10.1 Stored Procedure memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in IBM DB2 up to 10.1. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Stored Procedure. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2012-4826. No exploit exists. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 up to 10.1 (Database Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Stored Procedure. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the SQL/PSM (aka SQL Persistent Stored Module) Stored Procedure (SP) infrastructure in IBM DB2 9.1, 9.5, 9.7 before FP7, 9.8, and 10.1 might allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code by debugging a stored procedure.

The weakness was disclosed 10/19/2012 by Martin Rakhmanov with Application Security Inc. as CVE-2012-4826 as confirmed advisory (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is available at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4826 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/18/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62701 (IBM DB2 9.7 < Fix Pack 7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19822 (IBM DB2 SQL/PSM Stored Procedure Debugging Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-01.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (62701), SecurityFocus (BID 56133†), OSVDB (86414†), Secunia (SA50921†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027689†). The entry VDB-5688 is pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
