Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 up to Server 2012 R2 OLE code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 up to Server 2012 R2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component OLE Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was published 10/21/2014 by Drew Hintz, Shane Huntley, Matty Pellegrino, Haifei Li and Bing Sun (McAfee) with Google Security Team as Microsoft Security Advisory 3010060 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release happened without involvement of Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-6352 since 09/11/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/22/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact.

A public exploit has been developed by Abhishek Lyall in Ruby and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78627 (MS KB3010060: Vulnerability in Microsoft OLE Could Allow Remote Code Execution (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90987 (Microsoft Windows OLE Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-064)). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 02/25/2022 with a due date of 08/25/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Applying the patch Microsoft Security Advisory 3010060 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16926.
